LOVE LETTERS by The Chocolate Cat - completed

I have done it! Yes that is right, I have completed my first cross stitch project. I am so proud :) It was so much fun. I have now been looking at a few new pictures and patterns. Wow, there is so many to choose from but when I read about back stitching, and half stitches and confetti - what on earth are they talking about? I will have to ask my yahoo chat groups for help I think :)

Funny quote:
All generalizations are false, including this one.

  2. It looks wonderful! I didn't realize this was your first piece. :o) Backstitching is just outlining your stitching. So you are going straight corner to corner instead of crossing the square diagnally. Make sense? Half stitches are just not crossing your stitches. So you only have / instead of X. It's usually used for an area like sky where you want a lighter effect. Confetti is something that almost all stitchers dislike. It's when you have an area of stitching that is all different colors. So when you stitch a stitch the next one (of that color) is far away and you have to decide if you are going to finish off every stitch or drag the floss an inch or two on the back to get to the next stitch of that color. Does that make any sense? Just imagine taking a handfull of confetti and throwing it up. The colors are all scattered. it's kind of a pain but usually creates a nice effect when stitched. Maybe someone else can explain it better. There are sites that explain the different stitches too but I'm not sure what they are. Ask on list. Someone will know. :o)

    Hugs, Elaine

  7. I just popped in to WELCOME you to the Totally Useless SAL, hope you are remembering to put those thread ends in that Totally Useless Container. And I do so hope that you will enjoy a long stitching career.

Your Love Letter is lovely, I wouldn't have guessed it to be a first piece. I hope your next piece is not a confetti design, we don't want to deter you right at the start (LOL). Just chose a nice simple and charming design like this one until you get a few more stitches under your belt and you'll progress up to the difficult ones. If you get a chance try one of the book stores for a magazine such as Just Cross Stitch or The Cross Stitcher (there are several such magazines) most of them will have diagrams in the back of the issue to show you how to stitch a full, half, and quarter stitch, plus each issue has several nice designs and you might like to stitch one of those and they'll tell you if it is an easy, medium or hard design to stitch. And of course the local library will have some books you can use, just remember Cross Stitch is not Embroidery...well it is, but in the case of books you'd want a book devoted to cross stitch, not embroidery in general. I'm looking forward to what you'll choose next.

  8. What a pretty design, and what a great job you did with it! Along with others, I must say that I would never have guessed this was your first XS. Elaine did a great job of describing the dreaded Confetti Monster. ;-)

  11. WELL DONE on your first cross stitch project - looks like you've been well and truly bitten by the bug (seeing your ebay buys)! Your husband won't know what's hit him as you build up your stash - that's one thing all xstitchers have in common . . . drawers full of charts, fabric, threads, magazines and kits that we just love to hoard!
